I don't know if every poker player would agree with these
tips, but they serve me well and if nothing else; will help you to understand
why the game progresses in the manner it does; and why you see some 5 card stud
poker players doing what they do.
If there is not a pair showing on the table: and you
have an ace or king, you will likely be first to bet. You should always bet
each round as long as you have first bet, because that means you have the high hand
showing. Failure to bet will result in some other player catching a card for a pair;
that otherwise would have folded long before.
when you get to the last round and all cards have been
dealt; someone has stayed with you all the way then 90% of the time they have a
pair. What I do in this instance is to check the bet to them. if they don't
have a hand to beat what you have showing, they will fold. (except the truly
stupid. in which case, take their money, some one else will anyway)
if they have something, they will bet. you can either call the bet,
but you aren't giving them the power to raise if you stay. or of course you
can fold. This also sets up chances for bluffing when playing people that know your
style of play. when you get to the end you can bet where normally you would have
checked, and you may be able to bluff your way past a hand that would have beat you.
*better know who you are playing well ....before attempting the latter mentioned.
In this game like any other poker game; don't get
bullied off the table; if the stakes are too high for you to be able to stay in
comfortably, then find a lower stakes game. Otherwise, if you are only
staying in for "only the utmost best hands", you will still lose in the
long run simply by the grind of the ante and the cost of seeing your first couple of
cards.
and finally,
you can and will win at 5 card stud if you play like this:
the ante is very low so you get to see your first two cards for
almost nothing. If you only stay in when you have a pair:
you will likely always come out ahead in this game. Note:
this works better for high stakes games; because lower
stakes games the players are more likely to stay in all the way to
the end of the hand which makes opens up the game to anyone willing
to pay the price to get to the end. I'd avoid low stakes 5
card stud because they aren't really even good for learning the game
due to reasons just stated.
